DCs’ Blog – 10 November 2018

A brief update this time but with some pleas for help – who do you know who could help with some of the things below?

Also, the District Training day is later this month – do you need to complete some training being covered or does someone you know?   It would be a shame to have to cancel some of the modules being covered due to low demand.

European Jamboree

After a gap of nearly 15 years, since the UK hosted the last European Jamboree in 2005, the upcoming European Scout Jamboree will take place in Poland in July/August 2020. Building on the fantastic programme developed as part of their World Scout Jamboree bids the Scouts and Guides of Poland invite you to join them for 11 days of activities, combining the chance to develop new skills, make new friends from across Europe and experience Poland’s beautiful countryside. Based on its own island close to the city of Gdansk, the purpose built site is within walking distance of beautiful sandy beaches, pine forests and a short bus ride from the bustling city. For more information on this fantastic event visit: www.ej2020.org

Wiltshire can take thirty six explorer scouts and four leaders. Plus five IST

So we’re looking for a leader team,

Please share the application form with your leaders, post it on your facebook groups and websites. The deadline is midnight of 18th November and interviews will take place soon after.

From the interviews we will select the unit leader and that person will be involved in selecting the rest if the team.

Queen’s Scout Award

The need for registration to undertake the QSA has been removed with effect from 1st Nov (and will not be possible from 8th January).

Also, as part of the change, there is a transition period whereby anyone now beyond 25 yrs old who had completed all sections but didn’t resister can now apply retrospectively.  This transition period lasts until 1st May next year.
Details can be found via the following link: queens-scout-award-registration

Training

The next District Training Day is on Saturday 24th November and the following modules are likely to be offered:

  • Module 16 – Introduction to Residential Experiences
  • Module 17 – Running Safe Activities
  • Module 10 – First Aid
  • Module 25(T) – Assessing Learning (Training Advisors)

More details from your Training Adviser or Guy, our County Local Training Manager (email ltm@wiltshirenorthscouts.org.uk).

Please can you think about attending if you need these modules and/or encourage others.

There are a number of Groups who do not have a Training Adviser – could you do this or do you know someone who could?  We are particularly keen on finding Training Advisers to support 1st Chippenham, 3rd Chippenham, 1st Crudwell and 1st Stanton St Quintin.

Appointments

We are still looking for a volunteer to act as District Appointments Secretary to support the work of the Appointments Committee.  This involves organising meetings of the Committee to meet with adult volunteers as well as seeking references for new volunteers.  Please contact us if you can help or know of anyone who might be able to.  Filling this role is critical to the smooth running of the Appointments Process and Panels.

In the meantime, in terms of new appointments where references are required, please can you email details of who to contact for the references to the Appointments Chairman as soon as you can (email appointmentschair@wiltshirenorthscouts.org.uk).  It is quite often lack of detail of who to contact or lack of response from referees which holds up people being invited to the Panel.

New Malmesbury Group

We are excited by the prospect of starting a new Group in both Malmesbury but need help!

We will be running taster sessions for Beavers in Malmesbury in January on a Tuesday evening from 6pm until 7pm.  The venue is booked and there is a large waiting list – can you help support these taster sessions?  If so, please do let us know.  There are ready-made, tried and tested programmes, so these sessions are relatively pain-free to run.

Group Scout Leaders

You will have seen an email from our District Chairman around the need for some new Group Scout Leaders across this District.  Please think about whether or not this is something you could do or know someone who we could approach and let us know.

Good Service Awards

Thanks for the nominations we have received – keep them coming!  Remember that training needs to be up to date.  Please use the form on the website where anyone can make nominations.
